ReadWrite Korean is a simple but effective shareware program that teaches us how to read and to write the Korean language (HanGul), from the very beginning. The latest version of this program has been fixed and enhanced, and it can now be used under Windows Vista operating system. The learning program presents twelve lessons, each divided into five categories: Letters, Writing, Reading, Listening, and Multichoice. From the application interface, we can follow the program or select a lesson, category, and letter we like best. From the Letters page, we can view a letter, listen to how is pronounced by a native speaker, learn its pronunciation compared to an English word, and its characteristics and requirements. From the Writing Page, we can view graphically how a letter is written by using the animate strokes feature, and practice it afterwards (not an easy job writing strokes with the mouse). From the Reading section, it is possible to view the word, listen to its pronunciation, and record our own pronunciation. From the Listening page, we can type the word after we hear its pronunciation. Multichoice provides a wide range of exercises. We can evaluate the first three lessons of this software free of charge for a 15-day period. There are other additional shareware programs that can be of interest to us: Korean FlashCards, Korean-English Dictionary, and Korean HakGyo.
